Dear God and Father of all humanity,
We thank you that in Your divine providence, you allowed America to be founded by people of faith with freedom of religion a core value. You blessed our forefathers with a vision of establishing a nation “for the propagation of Christian faith." You gave them safe passage and preserved them through the harsh winter and difficult early years. You blessed them with victory in the Revolutionary War. You granted them peace and security from all their enemies. You expanded their territory and blessed the labor of their hands.
Father, we know that You are not merely the God of America and that You show Your love and accept without partiality all peoples and nations who honor You. We just want to praise You because we are so grateful to have been founded by people who revered You, who acknowledged that You alone as the Sovereign Ruler of nations, who crossed the Atlantic desiring to spread Your kingdom borders, who prayed to You and sought Your guidance in establishing this nation, who desired to govern wisely and justly by the standards that You have revealed through Your creation and Your holy Word. Father we have truly been blessed to be “One nation under God” that still affirms, “In God we trust.”
We both praise You for this, Father, and are driven to our knees to intercede because You have declared, “To whom much is given much will be required.” Like the ancient nation of Israel, we inherited a good land and many blessings from You through our forefathers, but we have forgotten You. In our pride we have attributed America's greatness to democracy, to capitalism, to education, and to tolerance and diversity—to a thousand things besides You, O God! In our arrogance we have continued to pray, “God bless America,” without acknowledging that Your blessings can never be expected on a nation that disregards You and spurns Your standards of righteousness.
And so, Merciful Father, we find ourselves as a nation in need of the prescription You gave in your letter to the church at Ephesus: “Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first” (Rev. 2:5; NIV). Father God, I tremble for my nation, and especially Your church within her, when I consider the great height from which we have fallen and I intercede as Abraham interceded for Sodom. I know that the righteous Judge of all the earth will do what is right, and none can deny that we deserve Your holy and just discipline for our national sins. But Father, I also know that You take no pleasure in the death of the wicked. You prefer that the wicked repent and live. I praise You, Father, because You are slow to anger, long-suffering, and abounding in love. I magnify Your name, because You have not treated us as our personal and national sins deserve. Righteous Father, I pray You will continue to be merciful to us while the hearts of Your people in Your church commit to turning from their wicked ways and reaffirming and reclaiming the godly heritage handed down to us.
Father, please forgive the millions of Americans who profess Christianity with their mouths but their hearts are far from You. They are ignorant of Your Word and the holy life You demand. Father, please forgive Your church in America for being apathetic, for forgetting that faith without works is dead, for being conformed to the world instead of transforming it. Forgive us for being silent when we should have spoken. Forgive us for retreating instead of fighting the good fight of faith. Forgive us for the way we have stood idly by while many call evil good and good evil. Father, please forgive our nation for how it has been exchanging the truth of God for a lie.
We have exchanged Your truth that there is salvation in no other name than the name of Jesus with the lie that there are many paths to God and all religions are equally valid.
- We have exchanged Your truth that in all things Jesus Christ should have the supremacy with the lie that we shouldn't have public expressions of Christian faith in our Christian nation because it might offend non-believers.
- We have exchanged Your truth that Your Word is the eternal and unchanging standard of absolute truth with the lie that truth is relative and each should do what is right in his own eyes.
- We have exchanged Your truth that we are made in Your image and exchanged it with the lie that we are nothing more than highly evolved pond scum.
- We have exchanged Your truth that marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed kept pure with the lie that promiscuity is no big deal and even to be expected.
- We have exchanged Your truth that sex outside of marriage is sinful with the lie that as long as we are responsible and wear protection it is “safe.”
- We have exchanged Your truth that You made us male and female and that a man should leave his parents' home and cleave to his wife with the lie that same-sex relations are not an abomination but merely alternate lifestyles.
- We have exchanged Your truth that You form us in our mother's womb and that You already know us and have a plan for us while we are still in the womb with the lie that it is not a baby but a fetus in the womb and a mother has a choice to murder Your gift of life in her womb.
- We have exchanged Your truth that You, O God, hate divorce with the lie that we are free to divorce for any and every reason.
- We have exchanged Your truth that drunkenness is a sin with the lie that as long as we have a designated driver we can party hard.
- We have exchanged Your truth that if a man does not work he should not eat with the lie that the industrious ought to be forced to subsidize the lazy.
- We have exchanged Your truth that dishonest gain is despicable and replaced it with widespread corporate scandal and corruption.
- We have exchanged Your truth that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil with the lie that life consists in the abundance of things and gambling is not only an acceptable form of entertainment but also an appropriate way for government to be subsidized.
- We have exchanged Your truth that parents are responsible for raising their children and their moral development with the lie that parents should not “indoctrinate” their kids, should not discipline their kids for disobedience, and should allow them freedom to make moral choices without parental guidance and consent.
- We have exchanged Your truth that we should let no unwholesome talk come from our lips and set no vile thing before our eyes with the lie that what we see and hear from Hollywood is harmless entertainment.
- We have exchanged Your truth that not only those who believe and practice ungodliness but also those who approve of them are guilty with the lie that it doesn't matter who we vote for because religion and politics don't mix.
Father, in light of our many personal and national offenses, we acknowledge that we don't deserve Your blessings, but we desperately need Your grace. And Father, if we deserved it then it wouldn't be grace. So, in Your grace, O God, protect and preserve us for Your Own Name's sake. Strengthen the remnant of Your faithful followers and give us boldness to speak the truth in love. Convict the hearts of those who only nominally profess You to consecrate themselves wholly to Your will. Cause those who govern us to honor the founders of our form of government in following their example of prayer and devotion to You so that all laws and judgments that contradict what You have revealed to us in nature and in the Bible will be repealed and all new ones will be in harmony with Your will. Pour out Your Holy Spirit to flow across this nation and spark revival and spiritual renewal. For we know, Sovereign Lord, that if this were to happen we would enjoy Your favor and be blessed with the most secure and happy state of affairs. We would then live in peace because You would exalt us over all our enemies and give us rest on every side. For this we hope and beseech You in the name of our wonderful Savior Jesus, Amen.
